Short answer
E20 can change fuel economy, but there is no universal loss for every vehicle. Design, calibration, traffic, tyre pressure, maintenance, driving style and the measurement method all affect the result.

What the published record says
The 2021 NITI Aayog roadmap published planning ranges by vehicle design and calibration; a July 2026 Ministry release says reductions in some E10-designed vehicles are generally about 3-5% and rejects claims of a universal drastic loss.
Why this is the answer
The roadmap estimated 6-7% for four-wheelers designed for E0 and calibrated for E10, 3-4% for similarly calibrated two-wheelers, and 1-2% for four-wheelers designed for E10 and calibrated for E20.
Those are category-level planning estimates, not a guaranteed reading for an individual tank. Compare several complete fill-to-fill intervals under broadly similar conditions before deciding that a persistent change exists.
Important limits
- The 2021 ranges pre-date later vehicle calibration and large-scale field experience.
- A dashboard estimate or one partial fill is not a controlled mileage comparison.
