Short answer
E20 is petrol blended with 20% ethanol by volume. The blend name describes the fuel; it does not by itself establish the compatibility position for every vehicle.

The 2022 biofuels policy provides for ethanol-blended petrol with ethanol up to 20%, while the NITI Aayog roadmap defines E20 as the 20% blend used for the national transition.
Why this is the answer
Ethanol is blended into petrol before the fuel reaches the retail outlet. E20 identifies the blend level, not a separate fuel brand.
Vehicle guidance remains configuration-specific. The model year, engine, transmission and the manufacturer's own document can change the answer for an individual car.
Important limits
- Do not treat an E20 label at the pump as proof that a particular older vehicle has an exact manufacturer approval.
- Fuel sold at a retail outlet must still conform to the applicable fuel specification.
