Short answer
The Government's stated reasons are to reduce dependence on imported petroleum, lower specified emissions, build a domestic ethanol economy and support farm-linked income. These are programme objectives, not a promise that every outcome is identical across feedstocks, vehicles or journeys.

Why this is the answer
Blending domestically produced ethanol substitutes part of the petrol pool and is intended to reduce crude-oil import exposure.
The published roadmap also records emissions and agricultural-economy objectives. The scale of each benefit depends on the production pathway, supply chain and use case.
Important limits
- Lifecycle emissions vary by feedstock and production method.
- Programme-level benefits do not answer whether one exact vehicle has manufacturer-backed E20 compatibility.
